CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO
The city of Rio de Janeiro has a rich and colorful history. In the early 19th century, it was the center of power of the Portuguese Colonial Empire and later the capital of the Brazilian Republic. Portuguese, to this day, is the language spoken. Rio has been a key player in many chapters of the nation’s story. And, since times long ago, the city has been a popular spot for sport. Some of the attractions in Rio are the world famous Copacabana Beach, Christ the Redeemer, the largest Art Deco statue in the world, and Sugarloaf Mountain, making it very easy to see why Rio is known as Cidade Maravilhosa– the Marvelous City.
In Rio de Janeiro, Barra da Tijuca will host most of the venues of the Olympic Games in 2016. The rest will be located in three other zones of the host city: Copacabana Beach, Maracanã and Deodoro. Barra da Tijuca will also house the Olympic Village.
